Plissé vs Silk Pyjamas: What’s the Difference?
When you’re shopping for luxury pyjamas, silk is often the first fabric that comes to mind. It’s smooth, elegant and has that unmistakably luxurious feel.
But it isn’t for everyone.
At Sweet Dreams, we wanted to create nightwear that still looked glamorous and special, but felt relaxed and easy to wear. That’s one of the reasons we introduced plissé into our collections in 2021.
So, what exactly is the difference between plissé and silk — and which might suit you better?
What is plissé?
Plissé is instantly recognisable by its beautiful, finely pleated texture. Rather than sitting completely flat against the body, the fabric has movement and structure, giving it a relaxed, flattering drape.
It creates that dressed-up, luxurious look we love, without feeling overly formal.
It’s also wonderfully easy to wear. Plissé is lightweight, crease-resistant and doesn’t need the same level of careful handling as silk — ideal for pyjamas that you actually want to live in, not just admire!
And what about silk?
Silk is a natural fibre known for being incredibly soft, smooth and luxurious. There’s no denying that real silk feels beautiful against the skin.
However, silk tends to sit closer to the body and can cling in places where some of us would rather it didn’t. It also generally needs more careful washing and looking after.
And, of course, genuine silk usually comes with a considerably higher price tag.
Why did we choose plissé?
When we introduced plissé to Sweet Dreams in 2021, we were looking for something that offered the glamorous appearance associated with luxury nightwear, but with a more relaxed feel.
We wanted pyjamas you could put on and immediately feel good in.
Our signature plissé fabric gives you room to move, falls beautifully over the body and has that gorgeous textured finish that makes even a simple pair of PJs feel special.
It’s one of the reasons plissé has become such an important part of Sweet Dreams.
Plissé or silk for your wedding morning?
This is where we think plissé really comes into its own.
Wedding mornings can be long. There’s hair, makeup, photographs, bridesmaids coming and going — and quite a lot of sitting around!
You want to look beautiful for those getting-ready photographs, but you also want to be comfortable.
Plissé gives you that luxurious bridal look while remaining relaxed and easy to wear. It also photographs beautifully thanks to its texture and movement.
Add personalisation and you have something that feels even more special for the bride, bridesmaids or mother of the bride — and something everyone can wear again long after the wedding.
So, which is better?
There isn’t really a winner — it comes down to what you love wearing.
If you adore an ultra-smooth fabric and don’t mind giving your nightwear a little extra care, genuine silk can be a beautiful choice.
If you prefer something lightweight, relaxed, flattering and easy to look after, while still feeling luxurious, plissé could be perfect for you.
For us, that balance between comfort and glamour is exactly why we fell in love with it.
